Wael Shawky

Work of Wael Shawky (1971) is deeply rooted in his own observations of social change in his native Egypt and the Middle East. In his drawings, sculptures, installations, films and performances he touches on themes that can form the basis of social and political 'progress' such as identity, religion, history and geopolitics.

Shawky's projects are distinctly visual, while at the same time tending to go back to accurate facts, so that they lie somewhere between fiction and historical reality. As a result, the work raises questions about historical criticism. Can history be made without prejudice? And what role does historical perspective play in the development of cultures and the formation of national identities?
