Film

AP: Jumbo

Jumbo explores the raw reality of a love story, built in secret and intimidated by intolerance, as its heroine falls in love with a rollercoaster ride. A sensual, nocturnal, coming-of-age ballade humming magical realism, the idea came to Wittock as she read about a young woman who married the Eiffel Tower. Moved by the unexpected humanity behind the story, the Belgian director crafted the romantic dance between the movie’s loner character Jeanne, portrayed by Noémie Merlant, and Jumbo. Both film d’auteur and fantastic cinema, the movie is foremost about a mother-daughter relationship having to face an uncommon coming out. Jumbo premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival and will be released in Belgium on 18 March.
