Guiliana (Monica Vitti) is mentally adrift in the industrial desert she lives in with her dull husband Ugo, a manager in a factory. Guiliana roams through the decaying apparatus of modernity, heavy industry, roaring machines, noxious gases. She soon finds comfort in the company of M Zeller, one of her husband’s colleagues who wanders through the neighbourhood in search of a team of skilled artisans to work on a project in South America. For his first polychromatic film, Michelangelo Antonioni’s approach to the image is almost painterly: yellows, greens and reds stand out against the smoke and the dust.
