Accused in turns of being anti-black, anti-white, anti-USA and anti-gay, Coonskin never received a proper release and nearly put an end to its director’s studio. Ironically, Bakshi’s first live-action/animated film was aiming to incarnate a subversive response both to the budding popularity of blaxpoitation and to White views on the African American experience (conveyed by movies like Disney’s rendition of the Tales of Uncle Remus, Song of the South, which has since been tossed into the ash heap of history). Coonskin fiercely chews stereotyped iconographies of all kind, gargles and opens its mouth wide as it bouncingly shatters American hypocrisy.
