Sleeping and eating at about the same hours sums up my routine

The May/June issue gives way to a new 20-something list, featuring visual artists, photographers, art collectives, dancers, musicians and much more. Twenty people who are a representation of young society in Belgium, a generation ready to rule our world. Let us introduce you to the faces you didn’t realise you wanted to meet!

Jente Waerzeggers
musician and photographer, Leuven, 22

How would you describe what you do?

I have a multidisciplinary practice, mainly situated within Belgium’s alternative music scene. I work with photos, videos, and music. I’m part of De Nooit Moede, Kontakt Group and nacht, and photo editor for Not So Difficult Magazine.

What are you currently busy with?

Preparing two video gigs with De Nooit Moede and working on the artwork for a couple of to-be-announced records. I’m also giving skateboarding lessons to kids in Leuven.

Anything planned for the future?

Many things – an expo in STELPLAATS and the second edition of Not So Difficult in September. Also new music and publishing my website. For next year, my main focus will be my master’s project.

Nickname(s) people have given you?

I didn’t really have nicknames in the past but Victor De Roo started calling me J-Boy a couple of months ago. Best one so far!

Any new habits?

I find myself checking my mail more often, that’s fairly new. I also developed a safe Discogs addiction.

What’s your daily routine like?

My days are always different – going to school, editing, making work, or hanging around in the studio. It can be all four in one day. I think sleeping and eating at about the same hours sums up my routine.

Weirdest dream you’ve had?

I’ve had plenty of dreams about going out and being drunk since the start of the pandemic – those might’ve been even better than the real deal.

What artists are you listening to?

Maggi Payne, Sonic Youth, yyed, Yung Hurn, Plate De, Frederik Valentin, Still House Plants, Matthieu Serruys, The Breeders, HAJJ, the list goes on and on. I also like to listen to cellvl’s Instagram stories on repeat.

What advice would you give your younger/older self?

To trust yourself and not to fret about failure because it’s a part of the grind, lol.

Biggest personal change since last year?

Getting less intoxicated has been a blessing overall.

How did last year change your perspective?

I won’t be the only one saying this and it’s a very logical consequence of the pandemic, but I genuinely care about all things ‘local’ more than ever.

Are you a nostalgic person?

For sure, otherwise, I think I wouldn’t be doing what I do.
