Lifting the veil from Brussels' latest pop-synth enigma
We share Mike’s sentiment: Belgians are not as proud as they should be of their musical heritage. That’s why we’re always happy when a Belgian release gets picked for a Lost Album feature. As an artist who’s often underrated himself; Mike D.M.A. finds himself in his choice. And this, my friends, is where Basic Moves becomes part of the story. For part II of their 2 year anniversary they spread their underground approach to Antwerp and present an adventurous lineup with none other than Mike D.M.A. gleaming on the bill.
Words and selection
by Michael John Stordeur
Which album would you like us to discover?
Asmodaeus and his album titled Lies and Logic released on the Belgian label Walhalla Records in 2014.
I have tremendous respect for those who were here before us, the freedom of creation was much greater and balanced by the vision, belief and attitude
When did you first listen to it?
I discovered this project for the first time on Soulseek in the early 2000’s, not only was it very rare, but it was only available on audio tape at that time. Only two tracks from the album were available on the net. Asmodaeus is a side project of one of the members of the Antwerp group OB Minimax in 1984-85 mainly known for various appearances on the compilations of the Central Tapes label. It was a real revelation to me.
Why do you want to recover this album?
There have always been underrated artist, in which I find myself. I have tremendous respect for those who were here before us, the freedom of creation was much greater and balanced by the vision, belief and attitude. The DIY and raw side “of things” has a charm in a world where the technical and surgical side reign. We have lost a lot of spontaneity over time.
For fans of?
Artists like Snowy Red, Twilight Ritual, M-Bryo and other obscure artists from the minimalist Belgian synth scene. Most of them forgotten and it took the work of true enthusiasts to put them back in the limelight. The Belgians have often been ungrateful with their artists and are not as proud as they should be of their heritage. I find a shame!
What’s your favourite song on the album?
Obviously, it is impossible not to mention the two anthems ‘Radiation Dance’ and ‘Second Time is Different’ that allowed this artist to come out of the shadows. I must admit that I particularly have a real soft spot for the songs ‘Warsaw’ and ‘The Age of Self’.
These four tracks alone release energy and attitude rarely reached in the genre
These four tracks alone release energy and attitude rarely reached in the genre. Even if the atmosphere is dark, there is always light at the end of the tunnel. It’s rebellious, synthetic and uncompromising. To rediscover over and over again!
