Ready to blossom and overgrow the past
Music — this thing that is as much part of our life as it shapes it. Whether we’re going through the perks of early mornings or in search of the perfect catalyst to get a party started, we all have a mental playlist for specific memories and moments. Since here at Subbacultcha music is essential to our existence, we decided that from now on, every month, we’ll ask an artist to take some time to reflect on moments in life and the music that completed them. This month we’re asking Wim De Busser, the man behind King Dick, striving to offer the world a different sound to that of mainstream radio. Because with a new strange sound can come a different way of seeing the world, he says, and with that we can eventually change it.
This one gives me the kick in the ass I need to get to action. I usually feel like shit when I wake up, so I can really use a shot of energy like this.
I’m a big hiphop lover. It’s perfect for dancing! It’s also perfect for lovemaking, though, ooouuu… sexy music. This one’s got a really sexy beat, and the singer is really hot too.
A nice beat for a workout if you ask me. I love dancing to it, even though i’m not really a working out kinda guy. I do go for very long walks, to exercise mildly and seriously consider dancing as a workout too.
When I discovered Tim Presley recorded this song all by himself at home, it blew my mind. So inspiring! King Dick is very much influenced by Tim’s work. Maybe my favourite song of all time.
My friend and colleague Emiliana Torrini told me about this album, Carrie & Lowell, and I’ve been so thankful for her tip. Sufjan sings about his mother abandoning him when he was only a little kid and about her death. He relates this story in such a beautiful way, amazing. It blew my mind for real.
King Dick is playing In De Ruimte (Cosmic Slime), Ghent, 27 January. This event is free for members. Join here.
