A talk with Jane Penny, TOPS’s vocalist, at her home back in Montreal
Behind the moniker RIN lies the striving for a forgotten cultural identity that is brought back through pantomimic melodic acrobatics. Having come into being in the context of dance, RIN’s musical experiments have gradually morphed into a self-sustaining form of art that still gets its momentum from its choreographic potentiality. Like the loud fall of a tree in the woods, her songs only exist because of the people they reach. RIN’s whole approach to her work as an artist is to purposefully overlook the process in order to focus on the effects and consequences of what she delivers.
