The Sound Of Me

Anthony Brynaert

Music — this thing that is as much part of our life as it shapes it. Whether we’re going through the perks of early mornings or in search of the perfect catalyst to get a party started, we all have a mental playlist for specific memories and moments. Since here at Subbacultcha music is essential to our existence, we decided that from now on, every month, we’ll ask an artist to take some time to reflect on moments in life and the music that completed them. This month we’re asking Anthony Brynaert, organiser of MIND OVER MTTR, a vessel for progressive music and arts & a celebration of the weird and the wonderful.

A song for waking up

The first time I listen to music during a regular day is in the morning mostly when I’m walking towards school or work. This overwhelming song by Oklou makes everything around me just a little more beautiful and reflective.

A song that helps you focus when you’re working

I never really was for listening to music while working, too distracting. But for some reason, Cocteau Twins does the trick for me; it has to be Elizabeth’s dazzling voice that brings in magical powers.

A song for nostalgic moments

This song is really a time traveler for me, it reminds me of moments I forgot. And it also takes me back to that unbelievable feeling the first time I saw Lost In Translation <3

A song that boosts your creativity.

Both Amnesia Scanner and Sam Rolfes (who made the video) are completely unique in the music and art they’re making. I’m not an artist myself but they stimulate me to do my own thing and to always try pushing common boundaries.

A song for going out

This kind of song always does the trick for me: brutal beats, high pitched vocals and accelerating tempo. Sega Bodega and coucou chloé are amazing, but together they become really insane.

A song for relaxing

For the past three months, nearly every evening after I came home from my internship, I played this one. It’s an amazing song to slow down for a minute and enjoy the peace.

A song that makes you sad

Björk is my favourite person in the world. I can’t really put into words what her music means to me, but it’s something very special. This song is so painful but utterly beautiful at the same time, it’s haunting.

A song for your funeral

Forever on repeat.
